Presentation #9: Capital Punishment

1) What do you think the definition and purpose of justice is?

2) How does one justly decide between two conflicting interests, including those that relate to human rights?

3) Does society have the right to deny an individual their constitutional or human rights and if so, under what circumstances?

4) After considering your answers to questions 1-3, do you believe capital punishment is just/unjust and why? (If you are unsure indicate so and explain why).

Presentation #8: Alaska National Wildlife Refuge and Environmental Ethics

1. What effects do you think drilling within the wildlife reservation will have on Alaska's ecosystem?

2. Do you think that profit validates harming the environment?

3. Do you think that there could be alternantive motivation for drilling in Alaska?

4. What responsiblity do corporations have to the environment?

5. Do you think we are running out of oil? What should be done?

Presentation #7: Dogfighting & Animal Ethics

1. Would you put money on a dogfight or attend one, even though you know that one of the dogs, possibly both, are going to die in some horrific fashion? Why?

2. Do you feel that animals have the same right to live as humans do? Why or why not?

3. Would you ever knowingly put your animal in harm's way in order to make a profit?

4. Is it morally permissible to harm or kill an animal for profit?

Presentation #6: Euthanasia

Let's say John was suffering from cancer and there was nothing else the doctors could do for him. All pain relievers are not strong enough and John is in unbearable pain. The doctors only give him a week to live.

John just wants to end his life now, and die happy with no more suffering. John wants the doctor to give him drugs so he can end his life.

1. Is it ok to end the life a person because of the intense pain and mental degeneration that a person may suffer?

2. Is age a factor in ending a life because of terminal illness? What factors do you think should be involved to allow euthanasia?

3. Who should decide whether ending a person's life (euthanasia) is appropriate and why?

4. Is it moral or ethical to end a person's life because of terminal illness?
